March 5, 2008 ***PHOTO OPPORTUNITY Contact: Sonam Wangchuk, Regional Tibetan Youth Congress, 917-250-3844 Kate Woznow, Students for a Free Tibet, 917-601-0069 GLOBAL PROTESTS TARGET CHINA’S OLYMPIC GAMES TIBETANS COMMEMORATE 1959 NATIONAL UPRISING New York – On Monday, March 10th, local Tibetans and supporters will mark the anniversary of the 1959 National Uprising against China’s occupation of Tibet with colorful marches and rallies at China’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations (United Nations General Assembly), the Chinese Consulate, and at Union Square. Tibetans worldwide are calling attention to the Chinese government’s attempts to use the Olympic Games as a political platform to legitimize its occupation of Tibet. In India, Tibetan refugees will launch a historic return march to Tibet on March 10th as young Tibetans from across the globe gather in Greece to light the Tibetan Freedom Torch – pre-empting China’s Olympic Torch lighting later this month. Tibetan activists from New York and across North America are organizing massive protests in San Francisco on April 8th and 9th during China’s official torch relay run through the city. WHO: Tibetans and their supporters TIME/LOCATION: Monday, March 10th 9:00 – March from Foley Sq. (60 Centre St. near City Hall) to U.N. General Assembly Bldg. 11:00 – Rally at Dag Hammarsjkold Square (47th Street, between 1st & 2nd Ave) ***Singing of Tibetan National Anthem 1:00 – Protest at the Chinese Consulate (42nd and West Side Hwy) 3:00 – Rally and Speeches at Union Square (14th Street at Broadway) ***Speakers to include Professor Robert Thurman WHY: To commemorate the 1959 Tibetan National Uprising and shine the Olympic spotlight on China’s ongoing occupation of Tibet and worsening human rights record. The March 10th commemoration is being organized by the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress, Tibetan Community of NY/NJ, Regional Tibetan Women’s Association, U.S. Tibet Committee and Students for a Free Tibet. # # # |
